5. D.A.F.T., czyli głupkowaty

Początkiem filozofii jest zdziwienie

Po pierwszym sukcesie artysta chce go co najmniej powtórzyć. Słuchacze dali szansę, ale ze szczytu na dno prowadzi krótka droga. Trzeba zatem się przyłożyć, zadbać o każdy szczegół nowej piosenki. Spróbować na przykład całą głębie swojego intelektu przekazać w tekście nowego utworu. I chyba każdy przyzna, że zespołowi Daft Punk się to udało, wystarczy tylko zerknąć na tekst do “Around the world”:

Siedmiominutowa piosenka to dla radia za dużo, więc powstała także krótsza, trwająca tylko cztery minuty wersja Around the world, lecz jakże uboższa: o sześćdziesiąt cztery tytułowe frazy.

Rozłóżmy na czynniki pierwsze tekst utworu (oczywiście pełnej wersji). Każde ze stu czterdziestu czterech powtarzanych “Around the world" symbolizuje inne państwo na Ziemi. Nasi francuscy DJ-e niczym dzisiaj koronawirus chcieli dotrzeć w najbardziej odległe rejony świata i… wystarczy tych głupot.

Może ktoś zaprotestuje, ale sądzę, że nie słucha się Around the world dla tekstu. Do dziś utwór jest grany w radiach (w BBC Radio One czasem leci) i należy do najbardziej znanych dzieł naszego duetu. Pierwsze sekundy piosenki potrafią zaciekawić. Ten narastający bit jest w stanie Cię pochłonąć, nawet gdy właśnie grasz mecz tenisowy]. Rozbuja Twoje ciało, nawet gdy jesteś starszą panią spacerującą sobie z pieskiem po ulicy. Utwór jest tak dobry, że tańczono do niego już w latach 30’ XX wieku.

Wyreżyserowany przez Michela Gondry’ego teledysk mocno przyczynił się do kultowości Around the world. Reżyser zauważył, że utwór można podzielić na 5 różnych instrumentów: głos śpiewających robotów, gitarę basową, keyboard grający melodię, gitarę i perkusje. Każdemu z instrumentów przypisał różną grupę tancerzy, którzy ubrani w dziwaczne stroje chodzą w kółko tanecznym krokiem po scenie mającej przypominać płytę winylową. Pomysł zrealizowany przez Gondry’ego okazał się strzałem w dziesiątkę, stał się inspiracją m.in. dla klipu do “Daft Punk is Playing at my House” zespołu LCD Soundsystem.

Teledysk Gondry’ego idealnie wpasował się w styl Daft Punk, wyróżnia go to, co utwory duetu: jest prosty, dziwny, fajny, śmieszny (zależy od poczucia humoru) i przede wszystkim dobry.

Zadziwiać może też z jakim kunsztem Thomas i Guy-Man składali z niepozornych puzzli całość, która miała stać się zrozumiała dopiero po piątym i ostatnim teledysku do płyty Homework. Człowiek-PIES z Da Funk i Fresh, ANDROIDY z Around the World, policjant brudzący sobie sosem POMIDOROWYM mundur w Revolution 909. Może już ktoś widzi (te duże litery nie były przypadkowe!), że brakuje do kompletu tylko STRAŻAKA gaszącego pożar. Owszem, pojawił się on w klipie do utworu Burnin’ nakręconym przez Seba Janiaka (polskie korzenie Seby!).

I oto otrzymujemy… rozszerzenie pierwszego członu nazwy naszego duetu, skrótu D.A.F.T., jak się okazuje biorącego się ze słów: Pies, Android, Strażak, Pomidor. Powiecie, że coś tu nie gra? Wszystko jest w porządku, wystarczy te nazwy przetłumaczyć na angielski. Ostateczne wyjaśnienie widzimy w tytule filmu “D.A.F.T.: A Story About Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes”, wydanym przez duet w 2000 roku, na którym znajdziemy wszystkie wspomniane teledyski. Dla ciekawskich, Guy-Man rozwinął w którymś z późniejszych wywiadów także drugą część nazwy Daft Punk, ale… wystarczy tych głupot.
