A man from Helmond has been jailed for 5 years after causing a fatal accident. He hit a car in front of him at more than 250 km/h.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) had demanded four years in prison against the 25-year-old Brabander.
The accident happened on September 25, 2021 on the A67 near Maasbree. A 37-year-old German man from Mönchengladbach was killed. > Two other passengers, men aged 36 and 52, were seriously injured. The victims' vehicle caught fire after the collision.
The perpetrator, who was miraculously not injured, fled after the accident, leaving the victims in a helpless state. The court takes this
seriously.
Right to remain silent
Two weeks ago during the trial, the suspect invoked his right to remain silent. He only said another person might have driven the car, but
prosecutors say that conflicts with DNA evidence found on the driver's airbag and seat. That matches that of the suspect.
The Helmond resident is also not allowed to drive for 5 years. He has 14 days to appeal.
